Looking at contemporary art of the nineties, women artists have considerably reached the state of freedom in expressing their thoughts and themes. These women artists are fully aware of placing their art in relation to their cultures, societies and the world. They are also increasingly concious of their own contexts; localized or globalized, personal or social, psychological or sexual, political or environment.

The exhibition “Womanifesto” contains the artistic endeavours of eighteen artists from nine countries, namely Austria, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Pakistan, The United States, Singapore and Thailand. Through their personal contact and friendship, these women across cultures, borders and differences share some characteristics that bind them together as a group : a creator expressing herself as an artist, and through the art, deeply-felt female experiences of being a vulnerable individual, being a unifying force for family and community, a selfless devoted person as well as a nurturer are clearly captured. Their works are intellectually and expressively created in the forms of paintings, mixed media sculptures, installations and performances. Moreover, the works prove to be original, powerful, strong and feminine.

In fact there are two main themes emerging in this unique collection. The inspiration of one group reflects the preocupation with their society and the world; political issues, social conflicts and ecological concerns. The other group focuses on women issues, awareness of the changing role and status of women, their struggles, achievement and their dignity. This group of women artists use their art to guestion their roles in society. They strongly strive towards a meaningful art as it is drawn from experiences of everyday and as it possesses guestions about the present condition.

It now becomes apparent that this particular group of women artists articulate, personalize and enliven the interactive experiences of negotiating cross cultural dialouges that exist betw~en ourselves and many others. As a consequence, boundaries are dissolved and self awareness enhanced.

The art works in the exhibition “Womanifesto” are undoubtedly fonrning the “voices” of women artists. Beyond that, the interaction between the art works and the viewers will be an interesting learning process for artists who try to achieve a bali:l.nce between creativity and sensitivities, expression and interpretation.

In conclusion, regardless of nationalities, cultural or language differences and beyond their shared characteristics, these women artists are bound together by the visual arts as their common language.

Background

Womanifesto is an international women’s art event initiated by a group of Thai female artists. It is a continuation of a previous art exhibition that was held at the Concrete House Art Center in March of 1995. This exhibition was in celebration of World Women’s Day.

The exhibition has attracted wide press and media attention. It was described as “The NewDimension” in the contemporary art movement. With all the excitement it brings, we women artists would like to maintain the month of March each and every year as the most suitabletimeto celebrate World Women’s Day. March is an especially good time forwomen in Thailand for a variety of reasons. Their schedules are not very busy as it is the final term break for school children; the end of harvest season for rice growers; teachers have their days of rest and laborers as well as civil servants like to take their holidays at this time. March seems to suit this occasion well.

We are proud of our women artists whose numbers seem to grow. We have never had the opportunity to participate in any of these events in the past, but things have changed and more women are becoming involved in women’s matters as manifest throuth t~eirworks of art. These important works have earned them the international recognition they well deserve. These works of art now command attention in many major museums in the world today.

Women artists have come to realize that it is abouttimethey joined hands and hearts to make their voices heard for the benefit of their fellow friends.

Womanifesto will be the first of its kind in Asia. Most of the participants are well known Asian women artists who will gather together as one to present their views. Some American and European artist friends are expected to take part and will add to the truly international flavor and contribute to the grand celebration of World Women’s Day.

Date

Womanifesto will be held from March 2-31, 1997. The opening will take place ‘at Concrete House and Baan Chao Phraya on Saturday, March I, 1997. The events v:lill include: paintings, installations, video and performance arts.

Objectives

To promote a greater awareness of women in the society in which they exist by presenting their ways of thinking and doing things, which will ultimately effect among other things, the conservation ,of our environment as a whole.
To stimulate a wider appreciation of creative ways of thinking towards our world society and the use of intellectual activities and all disciplines of art as forms of free expression.
To help create the right atmosphere for a lively forum among Thai and international women artists where exchange of experiences can flow freely, regardless of different cultural roots.

Womanifesto

Performance Art

“Another Woman”

Mother was a distant love. Mother had never been a prominent figure at home until father passed away. In those days, living activities in the family depended on the mood of father. Mother became the intermediary between her !children and husband. When father died, mother tumed her attention to her ‘children, particularly her sons and their sons …

I had always wanted to speak to mother, to get her attention; to tell her how much I missed her whenever I was away from home. however, I could find no words to express this feeling to her in Teochew.

This work attempts to express the breakdown in communication in the relationship between the mother and daughter, In my attempt to involve my mother in the making of this work, I hope to articulate the support I find important in my life and more importantly the link between women, between two single women outside the conventional cultural context of a family structure imposed upon us by a patriarchal society.

The dam is now a symbol of development. We have so many excuses for building it and try to avoid many facts.

Kang Sua Ten Dam· is another emerging example of an attempt compromise ecological system with development. I met a lady from Chiang Muan, Phayao Province who represents her womenis community. She said that she would die protecting it.

“Stone Flag”

Stone is a material formed by nature ; it is very durable
Diaper is a soft tower for wrapping and projective care purposes.
Hand is a sign or symbol of creation, determination and demand, etc.
Handprint is a fundamental form of print which had been used since pre-historic times.
Flag is a symbol of nation or Jati a Thai word which also has connotations of birth.

“The Dakhinis of Compassion”

Dakhinis/ apsaras/ angels are heavenly spirits who descend to earth to inspire us to enlight!enment. This particular wrathful image of compassion seeks to awaken compassion in the viewer by offering her amns for sale. Rather than military amns hat destroy and cause suffering, we should think about investing amns of compassion thereby alleviating suffering and engendering true respect from the people.

“Female Labour Strike”

November 29. 1996 : The employers referred their employees to obtain their salaries from The Thai American Textile Company. at the same time closing down the factory at Soi Sena I. not allowing the workers in. These employees came waiting at the company, and filed a report to the Jatujak Labour Force Protection Unit regarding this matter.

After issuing a waming notice to the employers to make payments to their employees, the former refused to respond. Attitude of the employers clearly reflect their deliberate intention to deny payment. and this is an indirect way to force their employees to resign. A notice should be displayed to inform the employees of the employees received no payment. they collectively filed a report to the Minister of Labour Union, Khun Ekapom Rakkuamsuk. who provided them his maximum support and assistance to resolve the conflict, but to no avail.

It took 2 months for the whole process to reach The Prime Minister, January 13, 1997. The employers agreed to take care of the unpaid wages, however without compensation. Presently, these disappointed employees still stationed themselves at the company, insisting on their deserved compensation, at the same time, working on Simple jobs, such as sewing and knitting, making artificial flowers, and holding dancing party every week-end, in order to eam extra revenue to support themselves, for example: the cost of food. [80% of these employees consist of women.]

“The Noriphan figure is a girl-fruit in the Himaphan Forest which lures some ermits who have not yet attained the final stage of anchonte. These girl-fruits have limited lifetime and become rotten after a short while. The figures of the noriphon re mostly seen on Thamma cabinets [for keeping the scriptures] of the Early Rattanakosln period, and have never been found as male figures”

from: Settamart Kanjanakul, Sensaay laay Thai [Thai Pattem and Omament). 1993. !p.152 [in Thai, my translation]

My Noriphon Series paintings depict the noriphon tree and related to a true ory I was told when I was working on a mural project at Phayao, a province in the North ofThailand, during 1990-1991.

A twelve year old girl, the daughter of a noodle stall owner, was sold by her own parent to a brother agent for 3,000 bath[US $ 120). The price was discussed ‘by the parents in comparison with that they had received for other goods which they old In the market

I have presented on the skin (epidermis) and it’s sense through using the fascinating material latex. It was Iconsidered as inner and outer, or self and others.

The stream has moved to consider my own Isexuality and the sexuality and body of women. I think, when I ask myself and approach inward, I’m expected to have the direction for the outward and society.

This piece is constructed of three parts. The frst part expresses the independence of female sex using the latex sheet which is drawn as a vulva and the movement of body. The second part expresses the sense of incongruity in female body by the special costume of latex. In the third part, I face myself and talk through the video camera. The audience will touch the sensibilities of bodies ith their body and the existence of the performer as a woman.

“SABALA series”

In Hindu culture there exists a duality in the identity of On the one hand she is “abala” – the weak one as refiected in the Brahmanical law texts of Manu – Manusmriti. On the other he is “SABALA” – the strong one, in the form of a creative force.

According to Manu” in childhood a female must be subject to her father, in youth to her husband, when her lord is dead to her sons; a woman must never be independent”.

At the same time, other texts and religious rituals recognise that a woman in the fomr of the creative force, is the protector as well as the destroyer. With this “sacred” power, she is the one with the strength, as worshipped in the pre-brahmanical cult where the Mother Goddess is supreme.

I wish to represent this image of fertility, power and nourishment, to endorse a sense of female strength and spirituality which has been mislaid over the ages.
