For the No Man’s Land project, I wanted to examine the temporal possibilities of this obtuse territory. The act of waiting itself is a rather suspended state, or as Harold Schweizer wrote, somewhere between “boredom and desire”, a veritable no man’s land, obscured in its familiarity. As such, I wanted to examine the choreography of such a quotidian (non)activity, to see how it is played out in the theatre of the public. A public bench (one amongst a series of benches) was filmed on several occasions directly at the Alexanderplatz TV Tower in Berlin. Solitary figures were filmed and their restless gestures of waiting were fragmented and superimposed upon one another and re-composed upon an elongated bench. The uneasiness with which the waiters endure duration alone, mirrors the blurriness of the pluri-temporal characters, themselves suspended in time(s). This photographic work is also a study for an untitled three channel video installation.
